Competition in the UK economy for good quality, skilled employees and future business leaders is intense. Our activities demonstrate our commitment to developing staff and enabling the pursuit of challenging, rewarding, lifelong careers.
As outlined briefly in the Calor in the Workplace section, our Sales Academy programme aims to develop the personal and professional skills of our staff. In its first year of operation, the programme, accredited by the Institute of Sales and Marketing Management, saw 20 employees gain a professional qualification. A similar scheme is under development for Calor’s operational staff. With safety at the core of our operation, over 300 staff participated in practical fire safety training courses in 2004 alone.
As part of our commitment to developing skills in the wider industry and community, Calor actively participates in a number of learning programmes.
In terms of community involvement and local education, Calor has an established track record. As part of Calor in the Community, every major Calor site has linked up with a local school in a long term partnership. Improvement schemes have included external painting, ground clearing and landscaping, and the building of an ‘al fresco’ classroom.
Welsh Waste Management
In Wales, Calor reinforced its commitment to education with its environmental
management expertise, helping to design waste management systems for two schools
near the company’s Neath Customer Operations Centre. In addition, Calor has
established links with the Education Business Partnership – EBP – a Government
sponsored initiative aimed at supporting links between schools and businesses.
Mentoring Programme
Calor also operates a mentoring programme where staff are encouraged to support and
guide students in their coursework at local schools during lunch breaks. The company
also operates Business Days for local schools, designed to give students an insight into
business areas such as advertising, marketing, customer care and production.
These programmes have so far involved over 300 students in over ten schools.
Working Well
Several times a year Calor provides one to one job interview practice and presentations
on getting a job, designed to support young people seeking employment in
a competitive market.
