Calor Keeps Pallet Track Moving

When you’re distributing over 800 palletised consignments a day, nation-wide, you need a fleet of fork lift trucks you can depend on.

That’s why one of the UK’s leading palletised goods companies, Pallet Track, has entrusted Calor, the country’s leading supplier of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), to power its fleet of Jungheinrich fork lift trucks.

From its central distribution hub in Wednesbury, West Midlands, Pallet Track runs a 24 hour palletised goods operation. The Wednesbury facility is the central hub of the business, from where all goods are unloaded, sorted and distributed across the country.

Integral to this time sensitive operation is the fleet of LPG powered fork lift trucks. Although Pallet Track runs a 24 hour operation, the fork lift trucks are predominantly used in intensive spurts, from 8.00 p.m. through to 4.00 a.m. The fork lift trucks are in constant use during this time, being used to load and unload the delivery vehicles.

Nigel Parkes, Pallet Track managing director, highlights the importance of Calor to his operation: “Lifting and loading pallets is a core part of our business so it is imperative that our fork lift trucks are powered by a fuel source that is both reliable and flexible.”

Calor LPG provides the peace of mind that if a fork lift truck runs out of gas it can be refuelled in minutes. “When considering potential fuel options my concern was flexibility and downtime. I know that if a truck runs out of LPG it is a quick and simple procedure to refuel," adds Nigel Parkes. “Running electric fork lift trucks is not so easy - you have to manage the lengthy recharging process, and if this is not done properly, you face the risk of non-operational fork trucks."

Environmental issues were another factor Pallet Track had to consider. As well as delivering goods on time, part of its commitment to its customers is to deliver all goods in a clean and presentable state. “I didn’t even contemplate diesel, the particulate emissions are just too high. It would cover our products in soot and I wouldn’t want my staff working in those conditions,” he says. “Calor LPG is the clear choice – it’s cleaner burning with reduced emissions.”

Calor has recently installed two, 2,000 litre bulk tanks to power Pallet Track’s fleet of six Jungheinrich machines.

“The tanks provide a constant and more economical source of LPG,” says Nigel

Parkes. “It makes the whole re-fuelling process a lot quicker and easier by eliminating the need to handle individual cylinders.”

He concludes: “Calor held our hand throughout the installation process and provided refuelling training for all our operators. This kind of service assured me that I was dealing with an industry expert."
