LPG – A Simple and Effective Way to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

Local authorities and groundcare specialists can dramatically lower their carbon footprint for the benefit of all UK residents by simply switching their mowing equipment to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

That’s the message from Calor, the UK’s leading provider of LPG. It says that now is the time for local authorities and groundcare specialists across the UK to move away from traditional diesel and petrol-powered equipment and instead, adopt LPG as a fuel source, which delivers on performance, flexibility, cost and most of all has fantastic environmental advantages.

Independent tests carried out at the Millbrook proving ground demonstrate that LPG delivers lower emissions on a range of pollutants compared to diesel. As air quality is a major issue of concern for local authorities, with NOx, for example, a priority pollutant, the time to change has never been better.

Sabrina Jackson, Calor’s commercial market manager says LPG delivers clear environmental benefits over diesel. “Independent automotive tests conducted at the respected Millbrook proving ground and submitted to the Department for Transport show clear emissions benefits from using LPG powered groundcare equipment, compared to diesel.

“These environmental benefits are an excellent way for organisations such as local authorities, golf clubs and private groundcare firms, to cut their carbon emissions simply by switching to LPG mowers.”

The tests demonstrated that LPG emits:

• 120 times less particulate matter compared to diesel
• Less than half the NOx of petrol and less than one twentieth the NOx of diesel
• 17 per cent less CO2 compared to petrol and two per cent less CO2 compared to diesel, on a well to wheel basis

The tests were carried out comparing automotive standard four-stroke spark ignition engines running on LPG against automotive diesel engines. Sabrina said: “Automotive diesel engines are widely regarded as being the cleanest ever and are certainly cleaner than those used in groundcare. The automotive comparison is valid as exactly the same LPG technology is used in groundcare.”

Looking at the whole picture beyond emissions, Calor also provides an excellent case to make the change to LPG. The company has Europe’s most extensive LPG delivery network, which means closer proximity to customer tanks than any other LPG company. Calor is always striving to achieve more efficient delivery. The latest development is an automated Think Tank® telemetry system, which notifies Calor that a delivery of LPG is required, reducing routine deliveries and in turn, the environmental impact that these deliveries would have.

Calor LPG is stored in a completely sealed container with no possibility of contamination or spoiling – unlike diesel, which can see water entering the system. LPG bulk tank storage is also convenient and flexible – unlike petrol where there are restrictions on siting, and diesel, where tanks must be double bunded to comply with stringent regulations.

Finally, LPG’s impact on the environment in the unlikely event of a spillage is minimal as propane is lighter than water. It therefore readily disperses without combustion and with no contamination of water courses or surrounding land – unlike petrol or diesel where spillage is a major environmental concern.

Concluding, Sabrina said: “The development of LPG technology in groundcare has gained momentum over the last decade, from retrofit kits to factory fitted LPG models designed by leading manufacturers. The case for Calor LPG has never been better.”
