Royal Visitors Meet Calor Rural Pub In The Community Award Nominee

A visit to a thriving Welsh village has seen HRH The Prince of Wales see first hand the work of the Calor Village of the Year® competition and in particular a new award launched this year – Calor Rural Pub in the Community.

The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall met villagers involved in last year’s Calor Village of the Year for Wales competition. The Prince took part in a discussion group attended by members of St Dogmaels’ business community and a representative of BITC (Business in the Community) – an independent business led charity supported by The Prince who is its President. The grouped looked at ways in which Calor’s new Rural Pub in the Community Award and BITC’s rural enterprise scheme ‘Pub is the Hub’ can be best promoted throughout Wales to the maximum benefit of communities.

St Dogmaels was one of the winning villages in the Calor Village of the Year® for Wales competition in 2005 and during the visit, the village pub, The White Hart Inn, handed over their entry for the Calor Rural Pub in the Community award.

Calor, the UK’s leading supplier of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), in association with BITC and Pub is the Hub are searching the UK to celebrate pubs that have diversified their businesses to offer their local community a wider range of services.

The White Hart Inn in St Dogmaels is a true community real ale pub offering a vital meeting place for the local community, a welcome stop off for visitors and a source for people to buy local produce.

Suzanne Weir, Calor Village of the Year® manager, hopes the royal visit will encourage more rural pubs to enter the new award: “His Royal Highness has followed the progress of the Calor Village of the Year® competition for some time, having visited other winning villages in past years. The new pub award will showcase best practice and ideas that other rural pubs and licensees can adopt.”

Rural pubs still have time to enter the award, which is supported by Pub Chef of the Year 2006, John Rudden. John is one of the judges of the award and will visit the winning pub for the day and work alongside staff to deliver a charity event for the benefit of the local community. He will also host a return visit to his own highly successful establishment, the White Hart in Lydgate, Oldham, where he will demonstrate the secret of his own success.

Entry is simple – all you need to do is tell us in 500 words why your pub is sustainable. Information about the new award as well as an online entry form can be found at www.lpg-catering.co.uk/rural. Alternatively call 0800 216 659 or email enquiries@calor.co.uk for an entry form to be posted out to you.

The award is open to all pubs in rural villages with a population of less than 5,000 throughout England, Wales and Scotland. Closing date is July 15, 2006.

Pub is the Hub

Pub is the Hub encourages social enterprise and diversification projects for pubs where these can deliver commercial viability in supporting rural services which are under threat or have ceased trading.

Launched in 2001 by HRH The Prince of Wales, as President of Business in the Community and its Rural Action team, the scheme looks for innovative ways to ensure rural pubs remain relevant to the needs of local communities so that they can continue to thrive, In some instances, village communities acting as co-operatives have bought their own local pub in order to ensure it is retained as a service centre for the local community. Further information on Pub is the Hub is available from their website at www.pubisthehub.org.uk
